Wage workers not so free. Notes for a history of premodern wage relations
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article proposes a review of the problem of premodern wage relations and its relationship with the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Based on an extensive commentary on the compilation by Whittle and Lambrecht (2023), the path followed by the historiography of the transition is analyzed. Then we proceed to a detailed analysis of the concept of wage labor in Marx, to conclude that the continuity of the forms of wage exploitation that emerged in feudalism better explains the transition, rather than the supposed replacement of servitude by “free” labour.
