Abstract

The episcopate of Gregory the Great [590-604] is a milestone when Late Antiquity and High Middle Ages are analyzed. Throughout his life, Gregory built a textual repertoire of incalculable value for the modern historian. In one of his most important works -the Regula pastoralis- the Bishop of Rome analyzes churchman's role in all its features, emphasising specially in the exhortation. The objective of this work is to compare some of the directives there expressed with the actions of Gregory, observable in the Registrum epistularum. To achieve this purpose, we concentrate in the epistles concerning Judaism and Jews. We will try to demonstrate the consistency between some of the Gregorian guidelines set out in the Regula and their effective implementation in the Jewish case
