Abstract

This article analyzes the role of the social subject in the process of appropriation, transformation, and production of space in ancient Egypt, emphasizing the material and dialectical character of religion and memory. By articulating the category of social space formulated by Henri Lefebvre with discussions on memory and material agency developed by Leire Olabarria and Lynn Meskell, the study proposes to understand religious space as a mnemonic construction embedded in concrete reality, conceived as a dynamic set of processes, flows, connections, and contradictions. From this perspective, religion is approached as a field of social relations in constant production, in which subjects, objects, images, and landscapes actively participate in the constitution of the religious sphere. The analysis also discusses the distinction between material culture and materiality, emphasizing the need to consider the dialectical relations between people and things, as well as the role of power and social practices in the constitution of the material world. Thus, based on the analysis of religious sources from Ancient Egypt, it can be concluded that religious space constitutes a social production in which memory and materiality operate as active dimensions in the configuration of the world.

Alan Cristian Freitas Trindade, Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia,Laboratório de Ensino e Historiografia da Antiguidade e do Medievo (LEHAM - UESB) / Laboratório de Estudos Marxistas (LEMARX - UESB) , Brasil

He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB). He is a member of the Laboratório de Ensino e Historiografia da Antiguidade e do Medievo (LEHAM/UESB) and the Laboratório de Estudos Marxistas (LEMarx/UESB), where he is part of the research line “Pre-capitalist Societies.” He served as an extension scholarship holder at the Laboratório de Estudos, Documentação Inquisitorial e Sociedade de Antigo Regime (LEDISAR) and also participated in the Institutional Teaching Initiation Program (PIBID) (2022–2023).

During his undergraduate studies, as a scientific initiation scholarship holder funded by the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia (FAPESB), he developed the research project entitled “The Relationship between Subject and Space in Ancient Egypt: Religious Perception in the Old Kingdom and the Teaching of History,” which was part of the project “Dialogues between Ancient History and the Teaching of History.”

He holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (1992), a Master's degree in History from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (1997), and a Ph.D. in History from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (2007). He is currently a Full Professor at the Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia. He has experience in the field of History, with an emphasis on Ancient History, working mainly on the following topics: ancient economy, historiography, historiography of the ancient world, history teaching and historiography, economic history, and the history of the Ancient Near East.
