Territorial disputes and coercive power in the Hellenistic Peloponnese: the integration of Orchomenus in the Achaean Confederation

Abstract

The formation of cities and confederations in the Hellenistic Peloponnese is characterised by dynamics of coercion and cooperation. A representative case is that of the Achaean Confederation, which stands out for its foreign policy of territorial expansion, especially during the third and second centuries BCE. Our aim is to understand this process from an inscription that informs us of the integration of the city of Orchomenus, dated proximately from 235 BCE. (IG V2 344). Analysing it through Thucydides' political realism and from an environmental perspective, we test the hypothesis that coercion was preponderant in the territorial disputes, and was conditioned by the territory itself, since the Confederation used institutions, and human and environmental resources, in order to subdue new member cities to its interests.
